EDITORIAL SERVICES

Manuscript Review:

There are few things I love more than digging into a fresh manuscript. I offer two tiers of service for manuscripts:

  • Full Developmental Edit. This option provides writers with a comprehensive road map that will help them sharpen their manuscripts and get them ready for the publishing process. This option includes:

    • An initial conversation about your project

    • Extensive page notes, including editing suggestions, margin comments and questions

    • A thorough editorial letter discussing craft and structure elements — such as theme, tension, narrative and character arcs — as well as suggestions to strengthen your story.

    • A second conversation to discuss next steps

    • $10/ page

  • Read-Through Evaluation. This option is best for writers who want broader feedback, including beginning writers who want early guidance or more experienced writers who seek general input, but who don’t need detailed editing. This option includes:

    • An initial conversation about your project

    • Light page notes

    • A thorough editorial letter discussing craft and structure elements — such as theme, tension, narrative and character arcs — as well as suggestions to strengthen your story.

    • A second conversation to discuss next steps

    • $7/ page

Book Proposal Help:

The beauty of nonfiction books is that they can often be sold on the basis of a 40- to 60-page proposal. A proposal is essentially a business plan – a document that outlines your book’s basic premise, provides data indicating that there’s a sizable audience for it, and exhibits your best writing. Memoirs, narrative journalism, business books, histories, and biographies can all be sold on proposal. I’ve written several successful book proposals and have helped many others to craft their own.

    Client Feedback

Julia is an amazing editor to work with. She helped me with my book proposal, both in thinking about how I wanted to tell my story as well the actual editing. She has a gift for storytelling, as well as making prose more effective and beautiful. With her help, I was able to get a major book deal!” — Jane Chen, CEO of Embrace, untitle memoir (April 2024, Harmony Books).

"I had a memoir idea in mind for two years but didn't sit down to write a word of it until I worked with Julia. Her expert feedback and excellent breakdown of the elements needed to craft a coherent story allowed me to piece my story together. I wouldn't have gotten my book off the ground without her." —Robin Rinaldi, The Wild Oats Project (Farrar, Straus & Giroux)

"Julia is wise and experienced and I am grateful I hired her to edit my book. Julia's feedback was instrumental in polishing my manuscript, and as a result of her help, I found a publisher who loved my book."
— Karen Lynch,  Good Cop, Bad Daughter (Nothing But The Truth Press).

“Julia helped me figure out what the heart of my story was. Her gentle guidance and support allowed me to find my voice and turn my idea into a book that I’m extremely proud of.” Will Lutwick, Dodging Machetes: How I Survived Forbidden Love, Bad Behavior, and the Peace Corps in Fiji  (Peace Corps Writers)

I was stuck and Julia helped me find a way to forge ahead and turn my book into reality. I can’t say enough good things about her.” — Mark Morewitz, The Ponzi Princess (CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform)
